The Main Wayang Company is Singapore’s first professional Peranakan cultural arts & community theatre, group.
Established in 2004, The Main Wayang Company has quickly grown from strength to strength, making significant contribution to the preservation, creative development and progressive promotion of the Peranakan Culture in Singapore.
In promoting all things Peranakan through music, shows and events, The Main Wayang Company’s innovative style of modern, cutting-edge ways, has brought about a steady cultural revival and relevance to today’s fast-paced society, yet retaining much of our true traditional heritage at heart.
To date, The Main Wayang Company has produced and popularised 3 music CDs of original Baba Nyonya songs. This is where old tunes are given a new lease of life, layered with modern music arrangements, with something for everyone.
One of The Main Wayang Company’s signature strengths is its expertise in staging professional and entertaining shows, concerts and musical plays like - ‘Bibiks Go Broadway!’, ‘Bibiks in Parliament’, ‘Baba Nyonya Mari-Go-Round!’ and the multimedia musical ‘Siapa Baba?’, to packed audiences of ardent supporters & faithful fans!
With the Peranakan Culture enjoying a cultural renaissance, The Main Wayang Company is in the forefront, taking the lead to produce educational outreach programme to schools, organize ‘Toa Seh Jit’ birthdays & Baba wedding parties, stage heartland community shows and raise funds for charitible organisations. It even participated in local mega events such as Chingay Parades 2006 & 2010, the National Day Parade 2009 and the Singapore Arts Festival as well as international events such as the World EXPO 2005 in Aichi Japan. The Main Wayang Company is also regularly engaged for corporate events, ranging from themed dinners and launches to smaller intimate parties for all to revel and enjoy!
The Main Wayang Company has a healthy growing troupe of dedicated stage performers and behind- the-scene supporters who are affectionately referred to as our ‘Kakis’ & ‘Kawans’. They are indeed the heart and soul of the company. These include a 30 strong ‘Main Wayang Rhapsody’ Choir, our beautiful Nyonya models, always looking resplendent in their sarong kebayas, our ‘Anak Anak Wayang’ stage kids, our talented veterans and young actors, singers, dancers and hosts, with The Baba Band providing beautiful music for all occasions.
The management of The Main Wayang Company has also been actively collaborating with local and overseas Peranakan organizations. From across the causeway - Malacca, Kuala Lumpur and Penang, to the north in Phuket, Thailand and as far south as Melbourne, Australia. Keeping consistent engagement with everyone and fostering warm & strong relationships, everywhere we go.
The Main Wayang Company plans to continue its efforts to promoting the Baba Nyonya Culture with more music, shows and events as it brings the Peranakan Culture to greater heights. |
