The Main Wayang Company once again
performed in Asia's Grandest Street & Float Parade in the 2010 edition of
the Chingay Parade at the F1 Pit Stop,
representing the Peranakan culture proudly
in front of Singapore's President SR Nathan, Prime Minster Lee Hsien Loong,
Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong,
Cabinet Ministers, Members of Parliament,
thousands of spectators and many more who watched the TV telecast on 21
Febraury 2010.
The last time The Main Wayang Company
appeared in this annual parade was in 2006, then along Orchard Road.
The Main Wayang Company assembled a jolly
bunch of Babas & Nyonyas as well as our friends from the Persatuan Peranakan
Cina Melaka and
a sole representative from the Peranakan
Association Melbourne performing, from little children to senior citizens
who 'joget-ted' their way down the race tracks
to the original medley of 'Celebrate Joget
& It's Time for Sayang Sayang'.
It was indeed a joyful and wonderful
experience for all, as the group banded together, helping each other with
costumes, make-up, dance steps, co-ordination, food,
logistics and all the legwork that needed
to be done to get our 150 strong contingent with 6 trishaws, looking, moving
and sounding their best in front of a very enthusiastic crowd.
What was particularly pleasing was there
were many new faces, mostly young ones, who found a passion for the culture
and are all excited and motivated to promote their culture
through The Main Wayang Company's shows and
events.
The Main Wayang Company hopes to continue
to promote the culture on national platforms and events for more Babas and
Nyonyas to step forward to embrace our unique culture
and also to continue its momentum in
gaining national recognition for the culture to continue and prosper. HUAT
AH!
